Theoretical Approach to Counseling Name of Student Name of Institution Theoretical Approach to Counseling My theoretical approach to counseling is inclined toward the Adlerian Therapy coined by Alfred Adler. With this, I focus on the relationship between superiority and inferiority as well as the ways these feelings affect human beings (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan, 2012). Counseling requires that individuals receive advice that counter any feelings of discouragement and enhance their sense of belonging (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan, 2012). Obviously, it is the negative feelings that often lead to instability that is placated by counseling. I prefer motivating my patients and assisting them to work on their individual personalities. If at all they are fixated on the idea(s) of inferiority, they are bound to harbor mental characteristics. The approach enlightens me on the similarities between human beings while setting apart the things considered superior or inferior in their well-being (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan, 2012). I am intrigued by the working mechanism of Adlerian Therapy since its counseling scope(s) looks into the needs of an individual rather than a group. Quality, in this case, surpasses any form(s) of the quantity that may be upheld by other counseling approaches. Human nature, to me, is a paradox. In fact, most people do not even understand their behavior(s) hence; this makes it difficult for them to make any necessary changes or improvements. The Nature vs. Nurture debate, however, attempts to explain human nature by affiliating it with external and innate characteristics, respectively. There are violent people, for instance, whose violence is innate while others grasp this vile behavior(s) from their surroundings.
